Behind the design: Palm House

The Sainsbury’s Home designers let us in on all the secrets behind the latest collection

We caught up with our in-house designers to get them to spill the beans on the new Palm House collection. Here’s what they told us…

The inspiration

“This collection was originally inspired by the grandeur of Kew Gardens’ Palm House and the tropical trees and plants there, which create that lush jungle- feel.”

“The colour palette is inspired by greenery, which is really on trend for interiors this season. We wanted to capture this in a sophisticated yet contemporary style so we used copper and gold accents to help give the collection that glamorous edge.”

“A rich green colourway can be found in the textiles – which we layered up with our own in-house designed palm leaf print – and the accessories. This pineapple ornament for example, is crafted from metal alloy and given an oxidised copper finish to give it that deep green shade.”

How we did it

“A collection like this takes around 18 months in total to realise, from designing to launching in stores. Firstly, we work collaboratively to create our initial designs then we complete the final design briefs before sending them to our manufacturers.”

“Something customers may not know about Sainsbury’s Home is that we create almost everything in-house. We have an expert team to ensure our design process is as authentic as possible. There’s ceramicists, artists, typographers, 3D modellers, furniture specialists and textile experts.”

“All the prints in our Palm House collection started as hand drawn or painted illustrations by our in-house artist Jo. Using inspirational imagery, photographs and real world experiences as her starting point, Jo used a snap of a cockatoo to create the tropical print you can see throughout the textiles here. Like in the pink and green cushion above.”

Time to accessorise

“The accessories in this collection will layer well in homes with light coloured furniture and interiors. Plants are key in showcasing this style, especially palms, succulents and cacti which are all really on trend right now.”
“The ceramic vase and pot are real standouts – they have a beautiful green glaze that changes tonally with the texture. The embossed surface is inspired by pineapples and has a wonderful tactility. Plus, they’re handcrafted in Portugal so they have a real authentic, crafted quality.”
